Jay Shukla, Principal Consultant
Jay has been through many of the experiences that he now coaches and trains. New operating culture, new functional position, new industry sector, bigger role, entrepreneurial transition etc. He brings a strong commercial grounding to his human capital development work.
Jay graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Thereafter, he qualified and worked in London as a Chartered Accountant in a practice now part of Deloitte & Co. Subsequently he worked with the Standard Chartered Banking Group in East Asia, in various capacities.
At Standard Chartered, Jay started off by revamping the powerful Inspection function in Hong Kong. Thereafter he was given charge as Chairman Group Audit Quality Council to complete the transformation of the global audit function of this banking group across more than 5,000 offices in 55 countries.
Based on his organizational change capability, Jay was recognized as a High Potential executive and given charge of the Standard Chartered Securities Group as Director Finance, Credit, Strategy, Operations and HR. He was Chief Operating Officer, prior to being recalled to the parent organization at the end of his assignment. Under his watch, the Group, based in Hong Kong, overhauled its technology framework and operating model, acquired and started up businesses across Asian stock markets and in New York and London.
By then, he fully realized that people and not just systems and processes “make it happen” and retrained as a Human Resource specialist.
He joined the dynamic new Singapore headquartered consumer banking team, recruited from Citibank, as Global Head of Human Resource Development. His job dimension extended to 60% of the Banks workforce in over 35 countries.
The brief was to create a Sales and Service culture and framework. That then grew to include the introduction of a comprehensive competency management system, complete with a training academy and best in class suite of leadership and development programs. The retail bank has now tripled its size through mergers and acquisitions in which Jay was fully involved and contributes the lion’s share of Group profits. Standard Chartered Consumer Banking regularly receives Best Bank in Asia awards.
Moving into entrepreneurial life, Jay started up and ran Blow Horn Expeditions, a thematic cross cultural training platform and has also worked with nonprofit organizations in Singapore and New York.
More recently Jay is focused on building individual, team and organizational capability as an International Coach Federation certified coach and ELI Master Practitioner.
Over his career, Jay has attended professional and management development courses conducted at Trinity College, Cambridge, Manchester Business School, Cranfield School of Management, iPEC Coaching, INSEAD, France and programs at the Schools for Non Profits in the US and Singapore.
Jay has lived and worked in London, New York, New Delhi, Hong Kong and Singapore. He is married to a Korean, is a US citizen and Singapore Permanent Resident.
Through his firm, JointForce LLC and in conjunction with Payonk Consulting LLC, based in Seattle, WA, Jay coaches and trains across cultures, age groups, corporate and entrepreneurial streams. Building capability is his mission.
